Why IPL 6 was like a Bollywood blockbuster

IPL 6 is in the history books and though the last stages of the tournament might have been overshadowed by the match fixing scandal, Mumbai Indians are still worthy winners. Looking back at their road to the title, we are struck by how close it was to a perfect Bollywood fairytale.

Here are just a few reasons we think that the Mumbai Indians were actually starring in their own Bollywood blockbuster, rather than merely playing in another edition of the Indian Premier League:

1. The tournament was probably completely scripted: With every new day bringing us a new set of revelations about match fixing, it seems like nobody is clean any more. More and more of us are beginning to believe that the IPL is much like the WWE, where the end result is known well before the match. Know what else is scripted? Movies.

2. The elder brother was injured: A familiar trope in Bollywood movies is where the elder brother of the hero dies or is injured. This happened to Sachin - the elder statesman of MI - and the rest of the team had to soldier on without him.

3. There was a love story: Between the Mumbai Indians and the IPL Trophy, something which had always eluded them. Like all Bollywood love stories, it ended happily.

4. There was a strict father in law: Srinivasan, the BCCI President, could not have wanted MI to win; after all, he owns CSK as well. He is exactly like the strict parents of the bride, who do not want anyone coming near her.

5. There was a set of villains: CSK aren't the most popular team around. First, they played really good cricket through the tournament, and all of us hate successful people. Second, their CEO was arrested by the Mumbai Police for questioning. They played their parts as villains well.

6. One villain had superpowers: Sir Jadeja is...well, Sir Jadeja. Beating a team that had him in it was something absurd that could only have happened in a Bollywood movie - or in this IPL.

7. There was a random fat kid: Yes, Jr. Ambani, here's looking at you. Just like those rotund children who fill up space in Bollywood epics, you filled up (lots of) space in the VIP sofa.

8. There was an angry young man: In fact, many of them. MI was an aggressive team this IPL, whether it was Johnson's backtalk, Pollard's hitting, or Bhajji's exuberance.

9. There was a big wedding at the end: When MI finally won, the celebrations in the city knew no bounds; it was bigger than any wedding ever. All's well that ends well!
